But so that you may understand where all this error originates—the error of those who condemn pleasure and those who praise pain—I will lay bare the whole matter and explain those very things that were decreed by that inventor of truth and, as it were, architect of the blessed life. For no one seeks pleasure itself—whether it be harsh, hated, or avoided—but rather because great pains follow those who, through reason, do not know how to pursue pleasure. Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself—because pain is pain—and seeks to attain it; rather, it is because….

For no one loves pain itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that the consequences of which are painful?.

Adipisci velit, sed quia nonu. Sed ut perspiciatis unde omnis iste natus error sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium, totam rem aperia, eaque ipsa quae ab illo inventore veritatis et quasi architecto beatae vitae dicta sunt explicabo. Nemo enim ipsam vol quia voluptas sit aspernatur aut odit aut fugit, sed quia consequuntur magni dolores eos qui ratione voluptate sequie nesciunt. Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet.

The pleasure of sitting is to be desired. No one who loves pain because it is pain, who seeks to obtain it, and wants to have it, simply because it is pain. He does not pursue it. For the sake of pleasure, unless circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. But in a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammeled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure must be welcomed and every pain avoided. But because some pain is to be undertaken, or pain avoided, in order to secure some great pleasure.

Where does that say that anyone loves to pursue pain because it is pain, because it wants to obtain some pleasure. But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one that avoids a pain which brings no beneficial result?.

This is a pleasure to the accused, a pleasure to follow the pain, by the same pleasures which are the result of the pain, that they do not know. Nor is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. And to the smallest degree, anyone who ever undertakes any labor unless it is to gain some advantage from it. But I will explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and the pain of the soul, I will explain a great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of a happy person.
